Historical Fictions & Ritual Characters

Photographs by Jonno Rattman

“Historical Fictions & Ritual Characters” is Jonno Rattman’s ongoing photographic survey of American history and culture, offering vignettes as rich with complexity as the continent’s storied past.  In these pictures we see Lincoln calling home after delivering the Gettysburg Address for the 149th time, an off-season Easter Bunny on ice skates at Rockefeller Center and an entire indigenous culture reduced to a figurine.  Through portraits of the contemporary where the past is always present, Rattman reminds us of the ways in which meanings shift across time.
